In their statements, authorities allege that the pickup driver was under the influence of alcohol, and they recommended charges for intoxication assault. This late at night, I’d hope authorities also looked into where the driver got that supposed alcohol. There could be more than just a drunk driver responsible for these events.
While it’s not often talked about, a lot of these crashes involve negligent alcohol providers illegally over-serving someone. If a bar, for example, over-serves an obviously intoxicated patron, and people get hurt as a result, that bar can be on the hook for their role in the accident. Not only is this a resolution victims and families deserve to see, but it also gets those otherwise reckless establishments to clean up their act. Maybe nothing like that happened here, but it’s not the sort of possibility to let slip through the cracks.
