Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

I see people comment on crashes like this one often, and instead of waiting for all the facts, they just assume the driver must have done something wrong. But there are plenty of ways a single-vehicle crash can happen due to circumstances a driver can’t necessarily control.

Over decades of accident investigations, I’ve seen everything from mechanical defects to tire blowouts to road design flaws to hit-and-runs cause accidents like this. Is it more likely for something like speeding, alcohol, or distracted driving to be involved? Sure, but there’s no excuse for ignoring other possibilities just because they’re less likely. So unless there’s more information to consider than what I’m seeing, folks would be better off reserving any judgments they may have.
