How Did This Accident Occur?
Even if the allegations here are true, people might be asking how this crash occurred in a larger sense. We have a problem with drunk driving in Texas. Harris County in particular sees quite a lot of accidents like this, but it’s not even the worst in terms of drunk driving crashes. Yet folks in Harris County might have seen in recent years a more concerted effort to go after negligent bars, liquor stores, and restaurants that contribute to serious drunk driving accidents. This is not a unique legal concept but rather a city finally wielding laws that have been on the books for decades.
To put it simply, negligent alcohol providers who over-serve their customers contribute to drunk driving accidents. That’s not just my opinion—that’s the law. A bar, for example, serving someone beyond the point they’re a clear danger to themselves and others can be held accountable, especially when that person goes on to cause a serious accident.
This is why it’s frustrating how many accidents like this I see where authorities begin and end their efforts at the crash scene. Like I said, Harris County does better than most to be thorough, but they let a lot slip through the cracks. Either due to funding or motivation, there are just so many crashes like this one that many negligent alcohol providers continue to slip through the cracks so they can continue putting the community at risk. So, when people wonder how crashes like this occur, the answer might be a lot more complex than just a single reckless drunk driver.
Let me know in the comments if you think Harris County is doing a good job looking into negligent alcohol providers or if you think they should be doing more.
