Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened along RM 620 in the area of Debra Drive.

According to officials, 51-year-old Ahmad Holt Sr. was in a GMC Sierra pickup going northeast. A Ford F-150 was going northwest. According to authorities, the F-150 failed to yield at a red light. As a result, the F-150 crashed with the Sierra and a Ford Explorer.

Ahmad Holt reportedly had serious injuries due to the crash. Authorities did not report any other injuries. Police allege that the F-150 driver was under the influence at the time of the accident. They recommended a charge for intoxication assault.

How Did This Accident Occur?

If it’s true that a driver failed to yield while driving drunk, then it would seem alcohol is the likely cause of the crash. What can surprise folks, though, is when it’s not just the alcohol itself that can lead to crashes like this. Sometimes, it’s the way someone handled that alcohol—and I don’t just mean the alleged drunk driver. Let me explain.

Simply put, a lot of drunk driving crashes involve both negligent drunk drivers and negligent alcohol providers. I’ve been a part of literally hundreds of investigations into drunk driving accidents. The vast majority of them that happened late at night or early in the morning involved people on their way home from bars or restaurants. Then, when we continued the investigations to include those establishments, we would find evidence that the alcohol provider broke the law and over-served the drivers while those drivers were obviously intoxicated. That meant that both the alleged drunk drivers and the negligent alcohol providers broke the law and could be held responsible.

While I can’t say right now if anything like that happened here, it would be outright irresponsible not to consider that possibility. However, time and time again, I come across police reports which simply found that a driver was drunk, they charged the driver, and that’s where things ended. Without finding out if there were any accomplices, authorities allow those negligent bars to continue putting the public at risk. Not only that, but they do a disservice to the victims and families involved in these crashes. They deserve to see accountability for those who harmed them.

So, while alcohol may prove to be the cause of this crash, it’s highly unlikely that makes for an open-and-shut investigation. Hopefully the crash is in the hands of professionals who understand what it takes to get the whole story.
