Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that those involved deserve clear answers about what happened. That may seem simple, but in my experience, multi-vehicle crashes can be especially complex, and key details are often left unexplored. To truly understand what led to this collision, three critical questions must be asked.

First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation? With multiple vehicles involved, determining the sequence of events is crucial. Did investigators assess whether any of the drivers were speeding or distracted? Did road conditions, visibility or traffic signals contribute to the crash? It’s also worth considering whether the Mercedes driver had enough time to react to the slowing Volkswagen or if another factor — such as following distance or impairment — played a role. Without a detailed reconstruction, it’s difficult to understand how the crash unfolded.

Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect contributed to the crash? The Mercedes collided with two other vehicles, which raises the question of whether mechanical failure played a role. Brake malfunctions, steering problems or even accelerator issues could have affected the driver’s ability to stop in time. Similarly, did the other cars have working brake lights and turn signals? If any of these vehicles had an undiagnosed defect, it could change how the crash is understood. Unfortunately, mechanical issues are often overlooked unless someone specifically investigates them.

Finally, has all available electronic data been collected? Modern vehicles store black box data that can reveal critical information about speed, braking, and steering input in the moments leading up to a crash. If authorities analyze this data, it could confirm whether the Mercedes driver attempted to brake before impact or whether the other vehicles slowed gradually or suddenly. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras may provide further context. And in today’s world, reviewing cell phone records can be essential to determining whether distraction played a role.

At the end of the day, two people were seriously injured, and the least that can be done is to ensure a full and fair investigation that leaves no stone unturned. Those involved deserve real answers, and the only way to get them is by asking the right questions and ensuring that every possible piece of evidence is secured.
