An accident on Florida’s Turnpike in Fort Pierce on August 12 claimed the lives of three people traveling in a Chrysler Town & Country. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened near mile marker 171 when a semi-truck allegedly attempted a U-turn at the Official Use Only turnaround. The truck reportedly crossed all northbound lanes as the Chrysler approached in the inside lane, resulting in the Chrysler becoming wedged underneath the trailer. Two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, and the driver died after being flown to the hospital. The semi-truck’s driver and passenger were not injured.
If I were investigating this case, I’d want to know why a U-turn was attempted in the path of moving traffic. Determining whether the maneuver was made in accordance with traffic laws and industry safety practices will be essential.
