On July 14, 2025, Oak Island emergency personnel responded to a beach accident in which a 15-year-old was run over by a commercial vehicle between Keziah Street and Womble Street. Authorities say a 2020 GMC pickup truck owned by a surveying company was conducting work on the beach when it allegedly ran over the teen’s legs while the teen was lying on the sand. The child was hospitalized with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Even though this crash didn’t happen on a roadway, commercial vehicles operating in public spaces must still be driven with extreme caution, especially in high-foot-traffic areas like beaches.
