A Look at the Hit-and-Run Crash on East Seventh Street in Austin, TX

A hit-and-run incident in Downtown Austin left one woman dead and two others injured after a vehicle struck three pedestrians in the early hours of Sunday, May 11. The crash occurred just before 5 a.m. in the 700 block of East Seventh Street, near the intersection with Red River and I-35.

According to the Austin Police Department, the driver fled the scene, heading north on the I-35 frontage road. The victims were transported to a local hospital, where 20-year-old Erica Garza later died from her injuries. The other two pedestrians sustained minor injuries. Authorities are still working to identify the driver involved.

Crashes involving pedestrians in urban areas during the early morning hours raise a number of important questions. From my experience, uncovering the cause of a hit-and-run like this is not only about tracking down the driver—it’s also about understanding what actions led to the crash in the first place.

Could Distraction or Fatigue Have Contributed to the Crash?

Since the crash occurred just before dawn, investigators should consider whether the driver may have been impaired by fatigue or distracted while behind the wheel. Driving at that hour can increase the risk of failing to notice pedestrians, especially in areas with nightlife or late-night foot traffic. Cell phone records, dash cam footage, and nearby surveillance video may offer clues about the driver's focus in the moments leading up to the collision.

What Evidence Should Investigators Review?

In addition to locating the suspect vehicle, police will likely review security footage from nearby businesses, traffic cameras, and license plate readers in the area. Tire marks, vehicle debris, and paint transfers at the scene could also help identify the make and model of the vehicle. When the driver is found, examining the vehicle for recent damage and accessing its onboard data could provide further clarity on speed, braking, and steering behavior at the time of the crash.

Why It’s Important to Answer Every Question

In any hit-and-run case, accountability depends on identifying both the person responsible and the circumstances that led to the crash. A thorough investigation not only helps law enforcement pursue charges where appropriate, it also ensures that every factor, from environmental conditions to potential mechanical issues, is examined. In cases involving pedestrian fatalities, understanding what happened is essential to providing answers to those affected.
