A crash in Dryden on September 3 left one man dead after his electric bicycle collided with a small dump truck. Police say the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of North Street (Route 13) and Lee Road. The cyclist, identified as 50-year-old Matthew Adams of Dryden, allegedly collided with the side of a dump truck that was traveling through the intersection onto Lee Road. Adams was airlifted to a hospital but later died from his injuries. Authorities have confirmed the crash is still under investigation.

When the details of a collision are limited, the most important thing is a careful and methodical investigation. With a fatality involved, investigators will need to determine how both the e-bike and the dump truck approached the intersection, as well as whether visibility, timing, or traffic patterns played a role.

Could Driver Distraction Have Played a Role?

Although there is no indication yet of what led to the crash, distraction is often a factor in roadway collisions. Investigators may review whether the truck driver was using a mobile device, adjusting controls in the cab, or otherwise distracted at the time. Likewise, they may consider whether the cyclist was obeying traffic signals as he entered the intersection.

What Investigators Will Likely Review

Police will likely examine the traffic flow and signals at the intersection to determine how both the e-bike and the truck entered the roadway. They may gather statements from drivers, pedestrians, and other witnesses who saw the crash. Reviewing surveillance or traffic camera footage could provide a clearer picture of the sequence of events. Investigators may also look at the speed and movements of both vehicles leading up to the collision.

Why the Investigation Matters

This collision leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Only a full investigation into the movement of each vehicle and any potential distractions will provide a clear account of how and why the collision occurred.
