People may think just about every auto accident gets a crack team of CSI agents dispatched to it to learn the whole story, but that’s rarely how things work out. Single-vehicle crashes like the one in Houston, for example, rarely get the attention they deserve. The limited resources and personnel police have are often stretched thin, and single-vehicle wrecks on local roads get lower priority than, say, a 13-vehicle pileup on the interstate.

That’s not to say that the lower priority is deserved, or that authorities won’t do the best they can to investigate what happened on Clay Road. It would just surprise people to learn how many times we’ve re-examined accidents and found so-called “official” reports were full of mistakes, omissions, and assumptions. That’s one of the reasons I typically advise not jumping to any conclusions as more facts are gathered, even if the gatherer isn’t law enforcement. Maybe authorities here have been more thorough, but I doubt it’s safe to take that for granted.
