Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

As quickly as people blame drivers for single-vehicle wrecks, they’re even quicker to point fingers at teen drivers.

I’ve that kind of presumption too many times, but it ignores how many possible explanations there really are for crashes like this. Some might be within a driver’s control, but many others aren’t. For instance, did anyone find out if the SUV was in good repair? Was that stretch of road wet, uneven, or otherwise hazardous? Reports mentioned it was surfaced with caliche, which can cause trouble with traction; did that play a part? Could the driver have been incapacitated somehow?

Circumstances like those cause crashes every day but are too often overlooked. A young woman was seriously hurt here, though, and that’s more than enough reason to pay close attention and learn the whole story. I hope what authorities eventually find out will satisfy any remaining questions she might have.
