Houston, TX — January 31, 2024, one person was killed and six others were injured in a wrong-way car accident on I.H. 10, East Freeway.

According to authorities, six people were traveling in an eastbound Kia Rio which was a purportedly stolen vehicle when police attempted a traffic stop. The Kia driver allegedly refused to stop and a chase ensued.

Police reportedly ceased the chase due to safety concerns when the Kia Rio entered the Eastex Freeway exit ramp, entering the Freeway heading the wrong way. The Rio was eventually involved in a collision with an oncoming Kia Forte which had been traveling westbound on East Freeway.

A female passenger of the Kia Rio reportedly incurred fatal injuries as a result of the crash and was declared deceased at the scene. The 51-year-old occupant of the Kia Forte sustained suspected severe injuries and was transported to a local hospital by EMS in order to receive immediate treatment. The five occupants of the Kia Rio were also taken to a local medical facility in order to receive treatment for injuries of unknown severity.
