Houston, TX — January 31, 2024, one person was killed and at least five others were injured in a wrong-way car accident around 9 p.m. along East Freeway.

According to authorities, a chase ensued when police spotted a stolen vehicle on Chartres Street. During the chase, the stolen vehicle allegedly entered the westbound lanes of East Freeway going eastbound.

As a result of the wrong-way situation, the stolen vehicle was involved in a collision with at least one other westbound vehicle. One person who had reportedly been in the back seat of the stolen vehicle incurred fatal injuries as a result of the accident and was declared deceased at the scene. At least five other people who were involved sustained injuries of unknown severity and were transported to a local hospital by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment.

Several occupants of the stolen vehicle allegedly fled the scene before the arrival of first responders; however, the driver of that vehicle—who was one of those injured in the crash—was taken into police custody before being transported to a medical facility. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identities of those involved—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
