SUV driver Windy Neth, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities. A 2-year-old girl riding with her was seriously injured.

The Mustang driver, a 50-year-old Gatesville man, also died in the crash, authorities said.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Wrong-way crashes typically involve allegations that alcohol was involved, but that does not seem to be the case here. That means investigators must consider other possibilities.

Maybe the Mustang driver was fatigued enough to cross over the median into the wrong lanes of I-14. Maybe he was fighting a vehicle defect when he ended up on the wrong side of the interstate. Maybe the signs marking the highway entrance were missing or damaged.

Investigators should be able to eliminate the least likely of these possibilities as they gather facts about this crash, leaving only the truth of what happened. Those facts will come from evidence gathered at the scene, witness statements, data from the vehicles, cell phone records and available video footage. A qualified expert may need to examine the vehicles if investigators suspect a mechanical defect contributed to this crash.
