An investigation is underway into a car accident that left one people dead and injured another during the evening hours of March 12th. According to official reports, a Subaru Forester operated by Wendy Halterman with William Garland as a passenger was travelling on Folly Mills Station Rd. in the westbound lanes when for unknown reasons the vehicle lost control and left the roadway and struck a culvert.
When first responders arrived on the scene, they found that Garland had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased while Halterman sustained serious injuries and she was transported to the hospital. At this time there has been no further information released about the accident, including what caused the vehicle to lose control as-well-as the status of Halterman’s injuries, however this remains an ongoing investigation and more details may be released in the future.

First, did law enforcement conduct a thorough investigation? In single-vehicle crashes, authorities often assume driver error, but a complete investigation should consider all possible factors. Were there any witnesses who saw what happened before the vehicle left the roadway? Were road conditions, weather, or visibility issues a factor? Were there signs of braking or steering correction that could indicate the driver was attempting to regain control? A full accident reconstruction can help provide much-needed clarity.
Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect played a role? It’s easy to assume loss of control results from driver input, but mechanical failures—such as steering malfunctions, brake issues, or tire blowouts—can also be contributing factors.
