Accident Report
June 15, 2026, one person was injured due to a wheel-off accident shortly before 7:00 a.m. along U.S. Highway 501.
According to authorities, at least one person was traveling in a passenger vehicle on U.S. 501 in the vicinity of the D Street intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the tire of an 18-wheeler became detached from its vehicle and collided with the passenger car.
One person who had been in the passenger vehicle reportedly sustained injuries of unknown severity as a result of the wreck. Additional details pertaining to this incident—including the identity of the victim—are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
People who are unfamiliar with these kinds of accidents might think they are just an unavoidable twist of fate. After over three decades in this line of business, I know that to be far from true. I’ve been involved with many wheel-off accident investigations, and I can tell you, more often than you might think, there were things that could absolutely have been done to prevent them from ever having happened in the first place.
To be clear, though, I’m not implying to know more about this specific accident than anyone else outside of the investigation does. It’s just that my experience with other cases involving 18-wheeler tires coming loose and causing accidents makes me hope that the people who are looking into this wreck are looking in the right places for answers.
For example, they should look at the inspection log and maintenance history for the truck. When was the last time the wheels should have been serviced? Did it get that service when it should have? Was there any extra maintenance that the wheel needed? If so, was it done? If the wheel needed to be replaced, was it done so correctly? All of these are relevant questions that should be asked by any properly thorough investigation. It might even be wise to have an in-depth inspection done on the truck, just to make sure that nothing important falls through the cracks.
It could end up that people who were not even present at the accident made decisions that played a direct role in the wreck and its outcome. The truth is, the people affected by this incident deserve answers, yes, but also to see that everyone who had a hand in the crash are held accountable for the role they played. That kind of result does not come from surface-level investigation.
