Accident Report

Pender County, NC — March 20, 2026, Waylon Mitchell was killed in a truck accident at about 7:45 p.m. on State Highway 53 east of Burgaw.

Authorities said a Honda Civic was turning left onto Croomsbridge Road when it was struck by a commercial log truck after another vehicle moved around it.

Honda driver Waylon James Mitchell, 18, of Ivanhoe died from injuries suffered in the crash, according to authorities.

The truck driver was charged with misdemeanor counts of death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Pender County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Initial reports indicate one vehicle avoided a potential crash, so why didn’t the log truck? The charges against driver indicate the truck was going too fast before the crash. Is that because the driver wasn’t paying attention, or because the truck had a mechanical problem that affected its brakes or steering?
