Accident Report
June 3, 2026, Veronica Lopez and four others were injured in a car accident shortly before 1:15 p.m. along Zaragoza Road (F.M. 659).
According to authorities, two people—53-year-old Veronica Lopez and an 80-year-old woman—were traveling in a northbound Chevrolet Traverse on Zaragoza Road at the Golden Gate Road intersection when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for reasons yet to be confirmed, as the Traverse was attempting a left turn, it was involved in a collision with a southbound Toyota Camry occupied by a 38-year-old woman, a 19-year-old woman, and 17-year-old girl.
Lopez reportedly sustained serious injuries over the course of the accident. The other woman in the Traverse and all three occupants of the Camry suffered minor injuries, as well, according to reports. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
How Did This Accident Occur?
I’m sure it would be tempting for some people to look at this accident and make the assumption that it must have been a result of driver error just because it happened as one vehicle was attempting a left turn. While that is a distinct possibility, I hesitate to settle on that conclusion without more information. Why? Because after over three decades in this line of work I have seen plenty of similar cases in which thorough investigation ended up uncovering evidence of less likely causes.
That’s not to say that I have more information about this specific accident that has not yet been made public, by the way. As far as I know, driver error remains on the table as a possible cause. However, I would like to suggest a hypothetical: A quick Google Maps search reveals the fact that the intersection is controlled by a traffic signal. While excellent tools, these signals are not infallible. What if the traffic light was malfunctioning at the time of the wreck and gave contradicting signals to the drivers involved, and that was the root cause of the collision?
Rest assured, I’m well aware of how unlikely a scenario that would be; but that does not mean that it should automatically be ruled out without being given any consideration whatsoever. After all, the people affected by this accident deserve to be given more than just the vague assumptions that often result from surface-level investigation.
