Accident Report

Newton County, TX — August 29, 2026, two teens were killed in an ATV accident at about 10 p.m. on State Highway 87 south of Newton.

Authorities said a southbound ATV veered out of its lane on a curve near County Road 3036. It collided head-on with a northbound pickup even though both vehicles tried to take evasive action.

Both teens on the ATV, a 14- and a 15-year-old, died after being transported to a Jasper hospital, according to authorities.

The pickup driver, a 56-year-old Newton resident, was not injured, authorities said.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Newton County crash at this time.

Authorities likely will investigate as they would any other fatal accident, but they also should commission an in-depth inspection of the ATV to determine if it had a problem with its suspension, steering or brakes that contributed to this accident.
