Accident Report

Midland, TX — September 20, 2026, one person was killed and two others were injured in a wrong-way accident at about 2 p.m. on State Highway Loop 250.

Authorities said a Chevrolet Camaro was going east in the westbound lanes of Loop 250. It kept going when police tried to stop it near North Garfield Street before crashing into another vehicle near North Big Spring Street. Debris from that crash caused two more vehicles to collide.

The Chevrolet driver, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to authorities, while two other drivers were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Midland County crash at this time. The accident is still under investigation.

How Did This Accident Occur?

Wrong-way accidents like this are usually attributed to a drunk driver, but authorities have not mentioned alcohol at this time. That means investigators likely are considering other possibilities as they try to piece together what happened on Loop 250.

Maybe the Chevrolet driver was distracted by a cell phone. Maybe he was struggling because the car had an issue with its steering mechanism. Maybe the point where he entered the highway was not properly marked.

That last possibility may seem unlikely, but I worked a crash once that happened because a construction crew failed to put a stop sign back after completing its work, so investigators must consider every possible to ferret out the truth.

Vehicle data, physical evidence, witness statements and available video footage should help investigators reconstruct this accident, while cell phone records could show what the wrong-way driver was doing at the time.

If authorities suspect a mechanical problem contributed to this crash, a qualified expert should examine the Chevrolet in a laboratory setting before it is repaired or scrapped.

This investigation should answer any lingering questions the injured drivers and their families have about this accident, or they may opt to have an independent investigator review the evidence.
