How Did This Accident Occur?

It is not clear at this point how these vehicles collided, or why. Did one vehicle rear-end the other? Did they come together while changing lanes? Was one driver distracted, or struggling to handle a vehicle whose brakes or steering mechanism weren’t functioning properly? These are the kind of questions that investigators should consider as they work to reconstruct this accident.

That investigation will be built on physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video footage of the crash. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time.

If investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this crash, an outside expert likely will be needed to conduct a forensic examination of these vehicles in a laboratory setting. Most law enforcement agencies aren’t equipped for that kind of inspection, in my experience, but the fallen driver’s family deserves to know as much as possible about what happened on I-69.
