Accident Report
May 10, 2026, one person was killed as the result of a box truck hit-and-run accident around 1:20 a.m. on Interstate 85.
Authorities said in initial reports that the accident happened along the northbound lanes of the interstate in the area of Shallowford Road, east of the DeKalb/Peachtree Airport.
According to officials, a driver was in a Ford F-150 going along I-85. While doing so, a box truck reportedly crashed into the back of the pickup. The box truck driver then allegedly got out and fled the crash scene.
As a result of the accident, the pickup driver sustained fatal injuries. That driver’s name hasn’t been officially confirmed. It’s unclear if authorities identified or located the driver. Additional details are unavailable.
How Did This Accident Occur?
Authorities right now say this happened because a box truck driver was following too closely. That could also be a sign the driver was distracted, or it could be a sign they were rushing to meet a deadline of some sort and were driving aggressively trying to save time. Even if the truck driver didn’t supposedly flee the scene, I’d want an investigation to look closer into their employer. That’s important for finding out if pressure or oversights behind the scene led to that driver’s reckless behavior or if they were just a single reckless individual.
However, with the driver fleeing the scene, I’m even more curious to know if he or she was working for someone. People don’t usually flee accident scenes just because they’re scared of being responsible for the crash. There are usually more serious things they don’t want police to find out about. Some examples I see a lot are drunk driving, drugs, warrants, multiple suspended licenses, a driver with previous reckless driving issues worried that another offense will result in harsher consequences, etc.
Have authorities been able to identify the truck driver with what they found at the scene? Was this a company truck? Can they release information to the public so people in the community can keep an eye out and speak up if they see something or know something? My hope is that it’s just a matter of time before authorities are able to work toward proper accountability for what happened here. My concern, though, is those steps may only focus on what’s obvious and miss what could be lying beneath the surface that also needs to be brought to light.
