Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a school bus is involved in a crash, people naturally focus on the safety of the children on board. Thankfully, it appears no students were injured here, but that doesn’t mean the wreck should be dismissed as minor. A full investigation is still needed to determine exactly why the bus driver failed to yield and whether this crash could have been prevented.
One key question is whether the bus driver was distracted or simply misjudged the intersection. Was the driver paying full attention, or were they looking at something else inside the bus? School buses require extra care when navigating intersections, and a momentary lapse in focus can lead to serious consequences. Investigators should look at onboard cameras and driver records to see whether distraction, fatigue or even inadequate training played a role.
Another issue is whether road design or signage contributed to the crash. Was the yield sign clearly visible? Were there obstructions that made it harder for the bus driver to see cross traffic? If this intersection has a history of crashes, that would be worth looking into.
It’s also important to examine whether the bus company has proper safety policies in place. Were drivers given adequate route training? Were they under pressure to stay on schedule at the expense of caution? In my experience, some bus operators prioritize efficiency over safety, which can lead to situations where drivers take risks they shouldn’t.
At this stage, there’s no way to say for certain what led to this crash, but accountability can only be determined through a full investigation. If authorities stop at surface-level details, key contributing factors may be missed, leaving important questions unanswered.
