Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When a pickup crashes into the back of a semi-truck hauling heavy equipment, the most important question isn’t just what happened, but why it happened. At first glance, some might assume the pickup driver was simply following too closely or not paying attention, but a proper investigation should go deeper than that.
One key factor to consider is whether the semi-truck was moving, slowing down or stopped at the time of impact. If the truck had come to a stop — either due to traffic or another issue — was it clearly visible to approaching drivers? Large trucks carrying oversized loads, like excavators, can create unique hazards if they are not properly marked with reflective materials and working lights. Investigators should examine whether the truck complied with all safety regulations for transporting heavy equipment.
Visibility is another major concern. Was the truck traveling at a much lower speed than surrounding traffic? If so, was it properly marked to alert other drivers? Some oversized loads require escort vehicles or signage to warn approaching motorists. If those were missing or inadequate, that could have contributed to the crash.
At this stage, there’s not enough public information to determine exactly what went wrong. But if investigators focus only on the fact that the pickup rear-ended the truck without considering visibility, stopping distance and whether the truck was following proper safety protocols, they risk missing key details. A full investigation should take all factors into account to ensure the complete story is told.
