Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I see that a semi-truck turned left in front of another vehicle, causing a crash, my first thought is that this wreck was likely preventable. Left turns are one of the most dangerous maneuvers a truck driver can make because they require crossing oncoming traffic. Professional drivers are trained to judge gaps carefully and to never assume that other vehicles can slow down in time to avoid a collision.

The key question here is why the truck driver proceeded with the turn. Did he misjudge the Kia’s speed? Was he in a hurry and trying to force the turn? Did something obstruct his view? Investigators should be looking at dashcam footage, black box data and any available traffic camera footage to determine whether the driver had a clear and safe opportunity to complete the turn.

Another issue worth considering is whether the trucking company played a role. Some companies push drivers to meet tight schedules, which can lead to rushed decisions. Investigators should examine the driver’s hours-of-service logs to determine whether fatigue or time pressure contributed to the crash.

At this point, it’s unclear whether the truck driver will face charges, but that shouldn’t be the only concern. The real issue is making sure authorities conduct a thorough investigation. If they don’t look beyond the surface-level facts, they might miss critical details that explain why this crash really happened.
