Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Anytime a crash involves a fuel tanker, people immediately think about the risk of fire or explosion. Fortunately, authorities have stated that no fuel leaks occurred here, but that doesn’t mean this wreck wasn’t serious. A full investigation is still necessary to determine what happened and whether anything could have been done to prevent it.
The first question investigators should ask is how the crash occurred. Did the truck or the car have the right of way? Reviewing traffic signals, black box data from the truck and any available dashcam footage will be critical to understanding the sequence of events.
Another key issue is whether road conditions or intersection design played a role. Some intersections are more dangerous than others, especially if visibility is poor or if traffic signals don’t provide enough time for vehicles to clear the area safely. If this intersection has a history of similar crashes, that would be worth looking into.
It’s also important to consider whether the tanker truck driver was operating safely. Tanker trucks require extra caution due to their high center of gravity and the potential for liquid cargo to shift, which can affect stability. Investigators should determine whether the driver followed proper procedures, including maintaining a safe speed and ensuring that all braking and handling techniques were appropriate for the conditions.
At this stage, there’s no way to say who is accountable, but this crash raises questions that go beyond just what’s visible at the scene. A thorough investigation must consider all factors — driver actions, road conditions and vehicle performance — to ensure that nothing is overlooked.
