Authorities indicate that there was a second 18-wheeler at a stop in the acceleration lane of a rest stop in that area due to having recently been extracted after getting stuck in the muddy shoulder. The first 18-wheeler reportedly failed to safely maintain its lane of travel, allegedly veering right out of the right and lane of the highway and into the acceleration lane of the rest stop. This caused the vehicle to collide with the back right corner of the halted 18-wheeler. It then continued in a northeasterly trajectory, also making contact with the other vehicles cab. The vehicle then went off of the roadway, the trailer and cab becoming detached from each other. The cab overturned and came to rest on its roof while the trailer remained upright.

The 38-year-old in the overturned cab sustained suspected severe injures due to the accident, while the other driver involved—a 28-year-old man—incurred reportedly moderate injuries. Both victims were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive treatment.
