1 Injured in Truck Accident on I-90 near Marengo, IL

McHenry County — February 15, 2025, one person was injured in a truck accident at about 7 a.m. on westbound Interstate 90 near Marengo.

Authorities said a GMC Yukon was involved in a crash with a semi-truck west of Harmony Road.

One person had to be extricated from the SUV by emergency crews after the crash near mile marker 39.5, according to authorities. The person, whose name has not been made public at this time, was flown to an area hospital with critical injuries.

No other injuries were reported.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the McHenry County crash. The investigation is ongoing.

Crashes between passenger vehicles and semi-trucks often leave people assuming the truck driver is to blame, but in my experience, the truth is rarely that simple. The key question in this crash is: What caused the initial collision between the SUV and the truck?

A proper investigation should start with the basics. Was either driver speeding or following too closely? Did one of them change lanes improperly? Investigators should look at things like black box data from the truck, traffic camera footage and any available witness statements to get a clearer picture.

Beyond that, road conditions at the time of the crash could be a factor. Was there low visibility, ice or another hazard that made it difficult to stop in time? Too often, people assume that a driver “should have been able to avoid” a crash, but without looking at all the conditions present, that’s just speculation.

The fact that emergency crews had to extricate someone from the SUV also raises another question: was vehicle design a factor in the severity of the injuries? Modern vehicles are supposed to protect occupants in a crash, but defects in seatbelts, airbags or structural integrity can make injuries worse than they should have been. This is something investigators often overlook, even though it could play a key role in understanding what happened.

At this stage, there’s still a lot that isn’t known. That’s why it’s important that investigators go beyond the crash scene to gather all available evidence. The goal isn’t just to determine what happened but to figure out whether any failures — by drivers, vehicle manufacturers or others — contributed to this crash.
