Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When a semi-truck collides with an SUV at an intersection and causes it to overturn, the key question is how the crash happened and whether it could have been prevented. My experience handling truck accident cases has taught me that intersection crashes often involve issues with visibility, right-of-way decisions and braking distances, all of which need to be examined here.

One of the first things investigators should determine is whether the truck driver had the right of way. Did the truck run a red light or fail to yield? Large commercial vehicles take longer to stop than passenger vehicles, so even a slight misjudgment in timing can lead to serious collisions. Investigators should review traffic signals, any available surveillance footage and witness statements to confirm how the crash unfolded.

Another factor is whether visibility played a role. Were there obstructions — such as trees, signs or buildings — that made it difficult for either driver to see the other approaching? Some intersections have poor sight lines that increase the risk of collisions, particularly for larger vehicles with significant blind spots.

Beyond that, road design and signage should be considered. Was the intersection properly marked? Were speed limits appropriate for the area? If this location has a history of similar crashes, that could indicate a need for safety improvements.

While authorities continue their investigation, it’s essential to look beyond the immediate collision and examine all contributing factors. A thorough review of traffic control measures, driver actions and roadway conditions will help determine what led to this crash and whether anything could have been done to prevent it.
