How Did This Accident Occur?
Upon reading about this accident, many people will be quick to point the finger at the truck driver. I’ve been in this line of business for over three decades, though. In that time, I’ve seen plenty of similar cases in which evidence of less likely causes ended up being unearthed by the investigation. Because of that, I hesitate to make assumptions.
To be clear, I am not implying that I know more about this accident than anyone else outside of the investigation. I just want to point out that, while driver error—fatigue, distraction, impairment, et cetera—has yet to be ruled out as a possible cause, something could have gone wrong with the truck itself to lead to the wreck. Trucks are complex machines. Any number of things might be behind the crash. Did it experience a tire blowout? Was there an issue with the steering mechanism? Did the brakes fail? Hopefully investigators—whether the authorities or a third party—get an in-depth vehicle inspection done on the truck and trailer. That way any mechanical malfunctions or product defects can be brought to light, rather than allowing them to fly under the radar.
On top of that, I would be interested to know whether or not the truck’s trailer was properly loaded. If it wasn’t and the load shifted in transit without warning, then that could also have played a role in the fact that the truck left the roadway. If so, then the person(s) who were in charge of ensuring it was safely loaded might bear a portion of the responsibility for its outcome.
In the end, the people who were affected by this accident—the victims and their loved ones—deserve to be given a clear and detailed understanding of not only how it occurred, but why. Surface-level investigation that conveniently places all the blame on the deceased’s shoulders just won’t cut it.
