The weather and road conditions in the area at the time were reported to have been rainy and wet. Officials indicate that, for unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler failed to appropriately control its speed. The rear trailer reportedly began to skid. Following that, the vehicle allegedly lost control, striking a concrete barrier on the east side of the road. This collision caused the Freightliner and its two towed trailers to overturn, coming to rest facing east and blocking all of the southbound lanes of the tollway.

The sole occupant of the Freightliner was reportedly entrapped in the wreckage; he had to be extricated upon arrival of emergency personnel. After his extraction he was transported to a local medical facility by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment for the suspected severe injuries incurred during the accident.
