My first question when I hear about a crash like this is, “What led to these vehicles coming into conflict?” Many people assume that highway crashes are simple cases of driver error, but in my experience, wrecks like this often involve factors such as visibility, vehicle maneuverability and traffic conditions that require careful examination.

One of the first things investigators should determine is how the crash occurred. Did one vehicle change lanes improperly, or was there sudden braking that led to a collision? Auto transport trailers have a higher center of gravity and longer stopping distances than regular semi-trucks, which can make sudden maneuvers more difficult. Reviewing ECM (black box) data from the truck could help determine speed, braking activity, and whether the driver attempted to avoid the crash.

Another key factor is visibility. Auto transport trailers can create significant blind spots for truck drivers, especially when loaded with vehicles. Investigators should examine whether visibility limitations contributed to the collision and whether all necessary mirrors and cameras were properly positioned and functioning.

Road conditions and traffic patterns should also be considered. This crash happened just before 3 a.m., a time when road construction, lane closures or reduced visibility due to lighting conditions may have played a role. If traffic was merging or shifting due to construction zones, investigators should determine whether clear signage and warnings were in place for approaching drivers.

At this stage, too little is known to determine exactly what caused this crash, but that’s why a full investigation is necessary. Looking at vehicle positioning, driver visibility and road conditions will be key in understanding how this wreck happened and whether anything could have been done differently to prevent it.
