Four Injured in Truck Accident on Parmer Lane in Austin, TX

Authorities said that they got calls about a driver in a Nissan Altima apparently asleep at the wheel in the area of Parmer and North Lamar Boulevard. When authorities located that vehicle, they say the driver attempted to evade officers. This ended when the Nissan crashed with a Volkswagen Jetta, a Kia Soul, and a Peterbilt semi-truck.

Due to the collision all four drivers had injuries of varying severity. Authorities alleged in their reports that the driver of the Nissan was under the influence of alcohol at the time. Possible charges weren’t specified.

Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

If all of these allegations are true, it seems likely that the driver apparently being asleep at the wheel and the driver allegedly being intoxicated are connected. It reminds me of a case our firm handled not long ago involving a person was so intoxicated they could barely function. Essentially, that person went out drinking at a bar, and they were buying round after round. Despite that person clearly being a danger due to their intoxication, the bar kept serving them—which is illegal under Texas law. The evidence showed that it got so bad, servers were actually physically pouring drinks into this person’s mouth while they were barely conscious. It was some of the most egregious behavior I’d seen in over 30 years of investigating negligent alcohol providers.

The reality is when someone gets that drunk, there’s usually a local alcohol provider that helped them get there. That’s not always true, of course, but it’s a possibility that should always be considered. Any possibility of there being an establishment out there still putting the community in danger is one that can’t go unaddressed. Otherwise, there may be an accident in the future with consequences far worse than what happened here.
