Preliminary information about the accident says that it happened at a set of tracks which appear to be along Dowell just off of Kuykendahl. Reports say that a man in a passenger vehicle was attempting to cross the tracks as a train passed through. As a result, the train struck the car.
The man in the car died as a result of the crash. No other injuries were reported. The crash remains under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
There certainly aren’t many scenarios where a train hits a car and the train is what’s to blame. However, that doesn’t automatically mean the driver of the car did anything wrong. Is that common? Of course. Things like fatigue, distracted driving, and just plain impatience can lead to crashes like this. At 2:00 a.m., I’d also hope authorities are looking into where the driver had been before the crash and if a local bar recklessly and unlawfully over-served the driver.
That said, it’s also important to consider unlikely possible events. Vehicle defects, issues with the crossing, visibility impairments, some sort of emergency going on—likely or not, it’s up to the evidence to tell the story. It’s best folks avoid jumping to conclusions when the evidence is still unavailable.
