Grand County, UT — July 21, 2024, Tracey Haeggstorm was killed and four were injured due to a semi-truck versus RV accident at 5:00 a.m. on Interstate 70.
Authorities said in their initial statements that the crash occurred along eastbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 200 near the Colorado state line.

According to officials, 67-year-old Tracey Haeggstorm was a passenger in an RV going along the interstate when a semi-truck up ahead reportedly lost control for unconfirmed reasons. The truck swerved and overturned along the lanes of travel, following which the RV crashed into it. As a result, Haeggstorm sustained fatal injuries. Two others in the motorhome had reportedly serious injuries, and the driver’s injuries were called moderate. The truck driver had minor injuries, authorities said.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Right now, the cause of the crash remains unclear, but recent reports say that the semi-truck driver was booked into Grand County jail. That would certainly be quite the coincident if the reason the truck driver was taken to jail was separate from why this crash happened. Even if the truck driver is being charged for the crash, though, that doesn’t necessarily make seeing full accountability simple or straight-forward. Here’s why.
A truck may lose control for a wide variety of reasons. Even if there was a mistake that led to the crash, investigations often show there’s more than just one mistake that led to the crash. I’ve handled hundreds of commercial vehicle wrecks, and it would surprise folks to see how often a truck driver’s employer contributes to accidents through their own actions. This is why it’s important to ask questions about factors that may extend beyond just the crash scene itself.
Has the truck owner been putting off necessary repairs? Was the driver fatigued due to unreasonable deadlines? Are they inexperienced or poorly trained? Has the truck driver or their employer been involved in serious accidents before? Did the crash happen due to drugs or alcohol the driver’s employer failed to test for? At the end of the day, a proper accident reconstruction should be able to answer these questions. So if authorities here are too limited in their investigations, they may be missing something important the victim’s loved ones deserve to see brought to light.
