How Did This Accident Occur?

Initial reports contend this crash was caused by a Kia that failed to yield, but we don’t know why at this point. Was the driver distracted? Did the Kia have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? Investigators should consider these questions as they reconstruct this accident, but they also should keep an open mind about what caused this crash.

Physical evidence, witness statements, data from the vehicles and any available video will help determine what happened better than officers’ initial impressions from the scene. Cell phone records may show what each driver was doing at the time of the crash, but investigators likely will have to turn to an outside expert if they suspect a mechanical issue contributed to this accident. In my experience, most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training to conduct a forensic examination of vehicles involved in a crash like this.

A thorough investigation is essential to provide answers for the injured driver and her family.
