Scurry County, TX — September 26, 2025, Thomas Rey was injured as the result of a car accident at around 12:20 p.m. along US Highway 84.
Initial details about the accident say that it happened north of Snyder near the Business US 84 merge.
According to officials, 79-year-old Thomas Rey was in a Toyota Prius going northwest along the highway. In preliminary statements, investigators said a possible steering issue led to the vehicle losing control, and it crashed.
Thomas Rey reportedly was seriously injured in the crash. No further information about the accident can be confirmed at this time.

It’s not at all common to see authorities mention a possible mechanical issue contributing to an accident. Seeing that here gives me some hope authorities were diligent when investigating this crash. However, even if they had suspicion of a potential vehicle defect, authorities on their own rarely have the tools or training for something so specific and complex.
In cases I’ve had involving mechanical issues, the vehicle needed to be examined by an independent professional accident reconstructionist. Authorities have all kinds of responsibilities that divide their efforts and resources, and few departments are going to have an officer with access to the specialized knowledge and tools usually required for identifying and preserving evidence of a mechanical issue. Independent investigators, however, have the training, tools, experience, and undivided attention that can lead to a proper diagnosis.
So while it’s encouraging to see the preliminary investigations identify a potential mechanical issue, it may just be the first step toward a proper resolution of the problem.
