Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Even a month following a hit-and-run accident, new details could still come to light to help identify and hold accountable the suspect runaway driver. I had a case, for example, where we recirculated reports of an accident in local media. Even though weeks had gone by, a couple saw the details and came forward. It turned out they initially followed the runaway driver and wrote down the vehicle’s plate numbers. They went to the authorities, but the investigating officer somehow failed to follow up with the witnesses.

Had there not been continued efforts to utilize the public as a tool in the investigations, it’s possible that the runaway driver in that case never would have been held accountable. If authorities here were being prudent, they’d put out as much information to the public as possible. Eventually, someone may be able to connect the dots and help do right by the victims and families affected by this incident.
