Accident Report

Victoria, TX — August 11, 2026, Terrence Cubit was killed and Laquanda Callis and a girl were injured in an alleged drunk driver accident at about 7 p.m. on Sam Houston Drive.

Authorities said a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado collided with a 2017 Toyota RAV4, forcing the other vehicle to crash into a utility pole near Lilac Lane. The pickup moved into oncoming traffic and hit another pickup, a 2013 Ford F-150, before stopping in a private driveway.

Toyota drive Terrence Cubit, 26, died in the crash, according to authorities, while two passengers — 44-year-old Laquanda Callis and a 12-year-old girl — were hospitalized with serious injuries.

The driver of the second pickup, 72, was not injured, authorities said.

The other pickup driver, a 22-year-old man, was charged with intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle after the crash, according to authorities.

Authorities have not released any additional information about the Victoria County crash at this time.

How Did This Accident Occur?

I expect authorities to investigate this crash like any other fatal accident, but I’m not as confident that they will dig deeper if blood tests confirm the pickup driver was intoxicated to figure out where he had been drinking before the crash.

That matters because under Texas law alcohol providers can share responsibility for alcohol-related crashes if they serve someone who was obviously intoxicated before they got behind the wheel.

I don’t know if that is what happened in this instance, but those affected by this crash deserve to know everyone who may have played a role in causing it. Most law enforcement agencies often don’t look for such connections, in my experience.
