Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Single-vehicle accidents make up a significant portion of the calls I get. Rightfully, families want to be certain their loved one’s side of the story is told fairly. Sometimes, that requires a lot more than a police investigation.

Some departments equip their officers with the time and tools needed for pulling vehicle data, canvassing for security cameras, inspecting the vehicle for defects, securing phone records, and other vital parts of a proper accident reconstruction. Others, however, put crash reconstruction low on their list of priorities, and it can leave families with more questions than answers even weeks or months after the accident.

This is why I have a pretty simple approach to single-vehicle wrecks. If families feel that authorities are answering all of their questions and addressing their concerns, then it’s likely they’ve done good investigations. But if authorities come up short, and a family feels there’s more to the story, it’s prudent to bring in another set of eyes to look things over just to make sure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
