Accident Report
April 5, 2026, a teenager was shot and killed due to an accidental shooting at around 5:15 p.m. off South Hulen Street.
Authorities said that the incident happened at an apartment complex located off the corner of the Hulen Street and Altamesa Boulevard intersection.
It appears there were two teens involved in the accident. Authorities believed the pair were handling a gun. The gun was fired, and one of the teens, a 16-year-old, was shot. They ultimately died as a result.
No other injuries were reported. Authorities have not reported charges at this time. The incident is still under investigation.
How Did This Accident Occur?
In just about every accidental shooting, the “how” traces back to one or more of the four rules of gun safety not being followed:
- Treat every gun like it’s loaded.
- Do not point the gun at anything you are not willing to destroy.
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target (and you have made the decision to shoot).
- Be sure of your target, what’s beyond it, and what’s in front of it.
If all of these rules are followed, it’s virtually impossible for someone to accidentally be shot. But on top of looking into how the gun was handled, it’s important to find out whose gun it was. Teenagers don’t usually own guns, so it’s important investigators find out if it belonged to a parent or other acquaintance. That way, they can help take whatever steps are necessary to ensure this can’t happen again.
