Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
In my experience, there are two kinds of accidents that get about as bad a rap as a crash can get: single vehicle wrecks and accidents involving teen drivers. In both situations, people tend to just blame the driver outright without even waiting for the facts. Authorities, too, can jump to conclusions if they let their bias get in the way of looking at the evidence.
That’s why crashes like this often fare better in the hands of independent investigators. At worst, those investigations may ultimately confirm everything that police find themselves. That can at least reassure families they’re getting the full story. At best, though, having a second, unbiased set of eyes look things over might catch details that authorities let slip through the cracks.
