Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

Regardless of what happened here, the concern is a lot of people are quick to jump to conclusions when minors are behind the wheel. I’ve learned over decades that the evidence needs to have the final say. That’s why all kinds of factors deserve attention after a crash like this.

Did a tire blowout? Were there hazards in the road? Have authorities pulled cell phone records? Did they consider someone may have provided alcohol to a minor? Did some other reckless driver cause the crash, then flee the scene? Has the victim’s vehicle been inspected for potential defects? Are there any nearby businesses or residences with cameras that may have captured the incident on video?

Ultimately, authorities may be able to show that they have clear and convincing answers because they conducted good investigations. However, if authorities can’t show that they looked at this from all angles, then getting the full story might require more thorough independent investigations.
