How Did This Accident Occur?

From reading initial reports on this crash, it’s not clear why the van collided with the dump truck. Did the dump truck stop suddenly? Was the van driver distracted? Did the van have an issue with its brakes or steering mechanism? The best way to answer those questions is to wait until the investigation has been completed.

Authorities will work to reconstruct with crash by gathering physical evidence, witness statements, data from both vehicles and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time of the crash, but an independent expert likely will be needed if investigators suspect a mechanical issue contributed to the crash. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training to handle the kind of forensic examination needed, in my experience, but the Dodge driver’s family deserves to know the full truth of what happened on U.S. 49.
