According to authorities, two people—39-year-old Tanya Fernandez and 37-year-old Laura Thiele—were traveling in a Toyota passenger vehicle on Patchogue-Mount Sinai attempting to turn left onto Pine Road when the accident took place. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, the Toyota was involved in a collision with a dump truck.

How Did This Accident Occur?

When people see accidents like this one—in which the collision occurs as one of the vehicles was attempting a left turn—they tend to assume the turning vehicle must have been at fault. After analyzing hundreds of truck accidents over the last thirty years, I’m not so quick to jump to that conclusion. The fact is, we still know very little about how this accident took place.

A quick Google Maps search will tell you it’s controlled by a traffic signal. It was possible, then, that the Toyota was making a left turn on a protected arrow when the wreck happened. The authorities should remain thorough and openminded as they investigate. I would be interested to know what state that dump truck driver had been in, for example. Was he distracted, fatigued, or impaired in any way? What about the truck itself? Were it’s brakes faulty, making it difficult or impossible to stop before the collision when it shouldn’t have been?

Hopefully the authorities get to the bottom of it. However, it their investigation seems to be lacking in any way, a third party investigation can always step in and take up that slack. After all, it’s never a bad idea to have a second perspective on things like this, just to make sure nothing important slips between the cracks. That way the victims of this accident, as well as their loved ones, can be given a clear and detailed picture of not only how this accident occurred, but why.
