How Did This Accident Occur?

Initial reports indicate this crash happened when a Jeep crashed into the back of a tanker truck on I-287, but we don’t know why at this point. Was the Jeep driver distracted, perhaps by a cell phone? Or did the SUV have problem with its throttle or brakes? Answering those questions could explain this crash, but authorities also need to look into why these vehicles caught fire.

Investigators likely will gather physical evidence, witness statements, data from both vehicles and any available video of the crash. Cell phone records could show what each driver was doing at the time of the crash, but an independent expert likely will be needed to help determine what started the fire. In my experience, most law enforcement agencies lack the time or training to conduct the kind of forensic examination that can sort out lingering questions about this crash.

Those affected by this crash deserve to have answers about what happened on I-287.
