A preliminary accident report indicates that a 2020 Dodge Ram 1500 was heading north when it left the road and hit a highway sign, causing it to overturn.

Passenger Stephanie Sanchez, 30, was seriously injured in the crash near Northshore Boulevard, according to the report.

The driver, a 32-year-old man, suffered minor injuries, the report states.

How Did This Accident Occur?

It’s not clear at this point what caused the Dodge to leave the highway. Was it forced off the road by another vehicle? Was the driver distracted, fatigued or impaired? Did the pickup have an issue with its steering mechanism? There are no easy answers to these questions, thus the need for a full investigation of this accident.

Authorities should find some clarity by going over physical evidence, witness statements, data from the pickup and any available video footage. Cell phone records could show what the driver was doing at the time, but if investigators suspect a mechanical problem contributed to the crash they may need to turn to an outside expert. Most law enforcement agencies don’t have the time or training needed to conduct the kind of forensic examination needed to identify such a problem, in my experience, but the injured passenger and her family deserve to know as much as possible about what caused this crash.
