Houston, TX — May 15, 2024, Sonia Payne was killed as the result of a car accident at around 2:00 a.m. along North Shepherd Drive.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the accident happened at Shepherd Drive and West Donovan Street.
According to officials, 58-year-old Sonia Gail Payne was in a Chevy Traverse going southbound on Shepherd. At Donovan, the vehicle somehow ran off the side of the roadway where it crashed into a pole. As a result, Sonia Payne was killed.
There were no others reportedly involved in the accident. No further information is available.

One of the most common concerns I hear from families affected by single-vehicle accidents is how to be sure authorities are telling the victim’s side of the story fairly. It’s unfortunately common for authorities to assume the driver did something wrong and simply move on.
That’s when independent investigations might be necessary. If it seems authorities just rushed through the investigations, steps can be taken to focus on the evidence and let the facts speak for themselves. Hopefully that happened here so the victim’s loved ones at least know they’re getting the full story.
