A huge red flag that comes up here is the fact only one person was harmed here. Generally, both people in a vehicle during a serious rollover will suffer similar injuries. One person being killed while another is reportedly fine suggests something went wrong. It could be something ordinary could explain this disparity of injuries, but it’s important to know if authorities are ruling out something more complex like a safety defect. Frankly, that’s not something authorities are generally equipped to rule out.

For example, I had a case a while back where authorities said someone was thrown from their seat because they weren’t wearing their seatbelt. The victim’s family, though, knew the victim always wore their seatbelt. So what happened? Well, more thorough independent accident reconstructions from specialists later proved that the victim’s seatbelt was defective. They were wearing it properly, but it failed. Authorities simply didn’t have the equipment or training to catch that, so they instead jumped to conclusions and ultimately got the facts wrong.

Like I said, that’s not a common scenario, but that’s what independent investigators are for. They typically have more experience, more time, and better tools for confirming or ruling out things which may be beyond the typical scope of a police investigation. So even if nothing unusual happened here, I can’t imagine losing a loved one and not being able to confidently say investigators are telling the whole story. Have steps been taken here to ensure there are no unanswered questions about what went wrong?
