How Did This Accident Occur?
A single-vehicle crash at 2:15 a.m. is going to raise some common red flags, and I’d never suggest ignoring them. Things like fatigue and distraction could have caused this. Alcohol is also a strong possibility that needs to be considered, especially if a local bar unlawfully over-served the driver and contributed to the fatal crash. However, those are just common possible factors. Are authorities looking into other possibilities that may be less common and more challenging to investigate?
For example, I rarely see officials examine vehicles for potential defects. It can take state-of-the-art tools used in a laboratory setting to properly rule out things like brake failure, defective tires, issues with automatic driving systems, airbag or seatbelt malfunctions, unnatural fire risks, etc. Some departments have these resources, but not that many. And if departments don’t bring in outside specialists to pick up the slack, important information can easily slip through the cracks.
That’s why I always talk about how complex single-vehicle car accidents can be. It isn’t that there’s necessarily anything unusual that led to the crash. Rather, ruling out those unusual possibilities is what can be so challenging. So if authorities can show they’re doing that, that’s good. If not, then it would be reasonable if a family felt more comfortable having independent professionals look things over so no important evidence is lost.
